New Story: The Last Flakes

May 27th, 2012 by jkastronis

In The Last Flakes, a man contemplates the end of the universe as it crumbles to dust right before his eyes. This is a rather short one, for me, so it should only take you a few minutes to read through. So go at it!

Review: Player of Games by Iain M. Banks

May 26th, 2012 by jkastronis

I recently finished off Player of Games by Iain M. Banks earlier in the week. A far-future sci-fi novel, it is the second novel set in the Foundation setting, following Consider Phlebas. Despite being written and published after Consider, Player is often considered the better introductory book for the series. I had already read Consider and found it very good, so I was eager to read Player and see how it could be better.

Settings Long Descriptions

May 17th, 2012 by jkastronis

Want to know more about the various random settings I have for my stories? Well, I’ve just added in long descriptions to every setting. The description will try to give you a general idea of what the setting is all about, without revealing too much information about it. So there are no spoilers, per se, in any of the pages.

You can reach these descriptions by going to the By Setting page and clicking on the little [?] next to each setting header. As I add future settings, I will provide a long description for each one.

New Story: The Beat Made Bad

May 6th, 2012 by jkastronis

Here’s the new story for the weak. In The Beat Made Bad, a spellslinger named Tris brings a bounty into town and gets into some trouble with his payment. This is a bit of a genre merge that I’m experimenting with and haven’t seen too much of before. A western-style story taking place in a high fantasy world. I’m not quite up to snuff on my western conventions (it’s something I need to brush up on. Anyone got any good recommendations?), but I think it turned out pretty well.

Book Review: The Big U by Neal Stephenson

May 1st, 2012 by jkastronis

I like Neal Stephenson. I think he’s a pretty darn good author. I really enjoyed Snow Crash and thought the Diamond Age was brilliant once I got past the beginning. His first novel ever is called The Big U. I finished it up last night after spending quite a long time reading it.
